 Joshua Sussman

Musicologist, Violinist & Violist, Torah Teacher

Joshua Sussman is a musician with a diverse background and singular skill set. A violinist of over thirty-five years’ experience, he has played with international symphony orchestras and chamber groups. Equally skilled in the standard classical repertoire, medieval and Baroque music and Jewish and folk traditions, Joshua can sight read most any score at a moment’s notice. He has made recordings in many genres, including a Naxos label recording of the music of George Antheil, the Chassidic-themed "Ta Shma" and "Wellsprings" by Simcha Kanter, an alternative rock album, "The Psalters" and a classical improv album, "BarTalk, the Improvs".

Also a trained musicologist, Joshua Sussman has recently completed a masters degree in historical musicology from the Hartt School with a thesis on Josquin des Prez. His lectures and writings often include an interdisciplinary approach, using anthropology, religious studies and language studies to enrich and inform the central topic.

In addition to his musical activities, Joshua Sussman has a four-year degree in Rabbinics from the Rabbinical College of America in Morristown, New Jersey and has been a student of Judaism in general and Lubavitcher Chassidus in particular for over twenty years. These experiences add a fluency in religion, Talmudic techniques, esotericism and the ways and lore of Chassidism to his writing and lecturing palette. The teaching that Joshua Sussman offers weaves these disciplines together in a rich, induplicable offering.

"If I Forget You, Jerusalem

This performance of a melody in tribute to Jerusalem, was played at my home. This capped off a class I gave during the Three Weeks when we mourn for Jerusalem every summer. Playing my violin is a special way that I integrate music into Torah classes.
